Shares of Sanyo Electric Co., the world's largest maker of rechargeable batteries, fell to a 31- year low after 1.3 million of its cells used in mobile phones were recalled on concern they overheat and rupture.

KDDI announced their spring 2007 handset line-up this week with ten new 3G models focused on form and function. The latest addition to their Au Design Project, the Media Skin concept by Tokujin Yoshioka, was introduced along with this announcement that it will go on display with earlier offerings - the Infobar, Talby and Neon - at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The other models on deck are coming from Toshiba (W51T and W52T), Casio (W51CA), Sanyo (W51SA), Kyocera (W51K), Hitachi (W51H), Sony Ericsson (W51S), the second-ever model from Sharp (W51SH) - a popular design originally introduced by Vodafone in spring 2006 (and also recently available from DoCoMo) - plus a first-time offer by top-tier maker Panasonic (W51P). read more »

A mobile Linux coalition between several major handset manufacturers and operators has finally been christened. The group was formed six months ago with the goal of creating an open-source platform for mobile phones. From Friday, it will be known as the LiMo Foundation. Its membership includes Motorola, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics, NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone. read more »

KDDI, the second-biggest mobile phone operator in Japan after NTT DoCoMo, aims to cater to mainly Japanese customers in the United States, a spokesman said.

The Asahi newspaper said KDDI aimed for a full U.S. roll-out by the middle of this month, offering phones made by makers such as Sanyo Electric under the KDDI Mobile brand. read more »
