By now everyone who can read knows that the big news in wireless this week was the announcement for "Steve's Amazing New Device". We've had several queries for comment over the last couple of days and reluctantly have decided to offer a few thoughts on his so-called 'future of mobile handsets'. Live shots of the HTC Athena (X7500). Its running Windows Moble Pocket PC edition with a 3.5-inch QVGA touch-screen and detachable qwerty keyboard. The unofficial specs being passed around indicate that this handheld is destined for Europe: UMTS 2100 with tri-band GSM/GPRS radio (what, no EDGE or HSDPA?), 802.11b/g WiFi, 256MB ROM / 64MB RAM, 2 megapixel camera, SD expansion, and USB 1.1 interface. Intel Corporation today announced design completion of its first mobile WiMAX baseband chip. Combined with the company’s previously announced single-chip, multi-band WiMAX/Wi-Fi radio, the pair creates a complete chipset called the Intel WiMAX Connection 2300. This development marks another major step in Intel’s efforts to deliver an “always best connected” mobile Internet experience for future laptops and mobile devices. read more »
